On June 23rd, Bernie’s Book Bank tested a new type of children’s book drive at Big Hollow Primary School in Ingleside. The one day event and featured a convenient drive thru book drop. Book donors simply pulled up in front of the school and Bernie’s Book Bank team members, equipped with masks and gloves, unloaded books from the vehicle for a touch-free experience.

“While our traditional book drives in schools and offices are very effective, they involve a lot of book handling by the time we distribute them,” Used Book Acquisition Specialist, Carol Collier shared. “By having team members take the books from the car and place them immediately in large over-sized containers we can significantly reduce the handling by the book donors and our in-house team.”

In total, the Big Hollow book drive brought in more than 2,800 books from 50 donors.

“Big Hollow did a fantastic job getting the word out to parents and community members,” Carol noted. “After spending the last few months tucked away in our facility it was wonderful to meet and thank the generous people who support our mission.”

The next one day drive thru book drive will  be Friday, July 10th (10 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.) at Winnetka Presbyterian Church. If you live in the area and have gently used children’s books to donate, pack them in the trunk or backseat of your vehicle and stop by on July 10th.
