Dickey’s Barbecue Pit* in Gurnee is a mouthwatering experience the Bernie’s Book Bank team can’t pass up when fortunate enough to be in the area. This Texas native institution got its beginnings with Travis Dickey, a WWII veteran with a love of gab and slow cooked meats. Still in the family today, Dickey’s meats are still slow smoked on-site same as they were in 1941. Their menu features beef brisket, pulled pork, St. Louis style ribs, polish sausage, spicy cheddar sausage, smoked turkey and marinated chicken. They also serve an array of top-notch sides such as jalapeno beans, mac and cheese and buttery rolls. When I have the pleasure of dining at Dickey’s I choose the three-meat plate, which boasts heavenly pulled pork, marinated chicken and incomparable spicy sausage. I never forget to add a healthy portion of their exquisite spicy barbecue sauce to top off this delicious meal. If you find yourself in Gurnee, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is a must try, hopefully we’ll see you there.
