Ever since she was a toddler, Elsie has been drawn to books. Often asking to go to the library to get more books, she has rarely been without one since she started reading at a young age.
Last year, Elsie’s love of reading found a new purpose. During a Bernie’s Book Bank sort through Kids Impact Community (KIC), she learned how Bernie’s mission helps children gain access to quality books they can keep at home. She realized that not all kids have their own books, something she believes every child deserves.
When Elsie turned nine and officially became old enough to join KIC as a Junior Leader, she knew exactly what her first project would be: a book drive for Bernie’s Book Bank.
With support from KIC, Elsie created the wording for a campaign featured on their website, which KIC then promoted on social media and in their newsletter. Collection bins appeared on the porches of several KIC leaders, and even in a Milwaukee law office connected to the group. Elsie also made her own flyers and handed them out to neighbors and classmates, spreading the word one doorstep at a time. Before long, she collected a total of 1250 books!
Her motivation was simple: “I think everyone needs books.”
