Summer Break Shouldn’t Mean a Break From Reading

Bernie’s Book Bank CEO Michael Abello recently joined FOX 32 Chicago to talk about why helping children build home libraries is one of the simplest and most effective ways to support literacy during the months when school is out.

The impact goes beyond encouraging a love of reading. A five-year randomized controlled trial found that students in schools receiving Bernie’s Book Bank books achieved higher literacy scores than their peers. The gains were equivalent to approximately 25–32% of an additional school year of learning compared with students in the control group.

The investment? Just $16 to help put free, high-quality books into the hands of children who need them most.
