Why Children’s Book Ownership Matters Even More During Summer Break

Bernie’s Book Bank CEO Michael Abello recently joined ABC7 to discuss why book ownership is so important—especially during the summer months when school is out.

That belief is backed by research. Bernie’s Book Bank conducted a five-year randomized controlled trial that found that students attending schools that received its books achieved higher literacy scores than their peers. The observed effect on literacy achievement would translate to approximately 25-32% of a school year in additional learning, relative to the controlled group.[1] reinforcing the powerful impact of access to books on a child’s reading success.

All at a cost of $16 per child per year.
