Laura De Spain
Visitor Services Specialist
Laura discovered Bernie’s Book Bank through a long-time friend and began volunteering as a “sorter”. The books, the people, and the mission all inspired her. A product of Chicago public schools and Northwestern University, Laura believes that learning occurs at the intersection of will and resources, and Bernie’s Book Bank feeds both in its young clients. Eager to contribute, Laura stepped up when she learned that support was needed for the Bernie’s Book Bank Visitor Services team and began as a volunteer. She is now is a part-time staff member in Visitor Services as well as a dedicated book sorting volunteer.
In her past professional career, Laura held several responsible positions in risk management for major Chicago firms, including as a senior manager for a national telecommunications company, and was a successful independent consultant for over 15 years. She is looking forward to helping Bernie’s fulfill its mission of putting books into the hands of at-risk children throughout Chicagoland and hopefully more of the U.S. as Bernie’s Book Bank grows.
